If You’re a Victim of Identity Theft
Identity theft occurs when someone gets your personal or financial information and uses it to pose as you or commit fraud. That may include accessing your accounts, making purchases or applying for credit in your name. If you believe your information has been stolen or misused, consider these steps:
Secure Your Credit
- Review your credit reports for accounts or activity you don’t recognize. You can review your credit reports for free at AnnualCreditReport.com.
- Consider placing a fraud alert or credit freeze on your credit.
- With a fraud alert in place, lenders are prompted to confirm that a credit request really came from you.
- A credit freeze restricts access to your credit file and can help block new accounts from being opened without your approval.
- For a fraud alert, you can contact any one of the three major credit bureaus. For a credit freeze, contact each bureau separately.
- Equifax: equifax.com
- Experian: experian.com
- TransUnion: transunion.com
Report the Identity Theft
- Visit IdentityTheft.gov to report what happened and get a personal recovery plan from the Federal Trade Commission.
Tighten Your Security
- Change passwords for accounts that may have been affected. If you used the same password elsewhere, change it there too. Use strong, unique passwords and turn on multi-factor authentication when available. Continue reviewing your financial accounts and credit for activity you don’t recognize.
Reach Out to Local Law Enforcement
- Depending on the situation, you may be advised to file a police report. Keep a copy of the report—you may need it as you work through the recovery process.
